Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of the Rosary Church

Religion

If you arrive at Palemonas, we strongly recommend visiting the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of the Rosary, which looks unpretentious from the outside.  Its interior is embellished with works carved by a well-known and skilled craftsman Henrikas Ratautas, namely a wooden altar, a font, Christ’s tortures and stations of The Way of Light, rare in Lithuania. Visitors to the church get amazed by a huge, green-grass territory, a real island of peace and quietness in the city.

Local people can tell a story of a miracle that took place here. In May 1994, during the chanting of a litany, tears were noticed on the St. Maria sculpture which stood in the unfinished cellar.  About forty people eye-witnessed this extraordinary event.  You can find the painted wooden sculpture which is a bit higher than one meter in the church. If you look at it a bit closer, you will notice the trace of the washed paint by the right eye. On 24 of May, a religious procession carries this sculpture along Marių Street during the annual feast day.

Construction of the church began in 1992 on the initiative of the local people and through their generous donations. Albina Taujenytė, daughter of Vincentas Taujenis, a well-known professor, a land-surveyor and expert in moors, donated a land plot and a house to the church.  Mass was conductedin her house or in the yard before the construction of the church. In 1993, when the construction project wastransferred to the Community of the Mission of Don Bosco from Italy, construction was completed, including the construction of the house of Salesian brothers and sisters. On 15 of August 1996, Sigitas Tamkevičius, Metropolitan of Kaunas and archbishop, consecrated the church and named it after Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of the Rosary.

The Salesian house accommodated pilgrims andheldrecollections.  You can reserve lodging for the night. The housealso welcomes individuals willing to spend their time in quietness, or speak to the priest or Salesian sisters about religion.

It is easy to reach the church by car, public transport or a train from Vilnius and Kaunas.  You can also find other places of interest, namely Salomėja Nėris Memorial Museum, Nightingale Valley, and Vieškūnai Hillfort located just a few hundred meters from the church.
