Dubrava Twin Trees

Nature

An oak and a pine grew as if from one stump in Dubrava forest about 100-150 years ago, the Dubrava Twin Trees are often photographed by hunters as anomalies of nature, or romantics who believe that love can overcome everything. In 1971, these trees were included in the UNESCO list of protected objects of Natural Heritage.

If you take a good look at the trees, you will notice that the pine's stem is flat where it splices with the oak, and the oak's branches have grown into the pine's stem. If you look higher, both stems come apart; yet even the most cynical person can see that these trees hold each other with their branches as if trying to protect each other from windstorms.  The pine is as high as 33 metres, while the oak's height reaches 27 m. The size of the common stem of both trees reaches 3.6 metres.

There is an old legend telling about these trees. Many inhabitants of Kaunas environs chose this place for declarations of love or for commemorations of important dates or anniversaries. Isn't it romantic to hear a story from your beloved:

"An oak fell in love with a pine. Nobody knows when it began. Whether the Jaybird forgot where it hid the acorn or a squirrel lost the pine's cone seed.  The sprouts grew into trees, and never turned away from each other for more than 150 years.  As time went by, the oak was clinging onto the slim pine more and more.  And so, they forever remained together to become green and freeze, rustle quietly and struggle against the windstorms".

Although there are no campfire sites, summerhouses or any other hiking facilities, we recommend choosing this place for a quiet picnic in nature.  Visitors to this place say that they were overcome with a joy.

Twin Trees can be conveniently visited when travelling to or returning from Juniper Valley in Arlaviskes. The distance between these two objects is about 6 km. When travelling from Kaunas through Vaišvydava towards Žiegždriai, you must head in the direction of Piliuona at the roundabout, and after driving 9 km you will see a road sign next to the main road.   After you leave your car here, walk along the beautifully planted forest for about one and a half kilometres.   The following GPS coordinates would also be of great help: 54°49‘4“N24°7‘14“E.
